CCTV surveillance has proved vital in fighting crime

Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Yogesh Kadam, held a meeting in Mumbai to discuss improving public safety recently. The focus was on how to make sure CCTV cameras across the state are installed and maintained properly and consistently. It was stated that there is a need for a coordinated approach towards CCTV installation and coverage of different departments.

CCTV surveillance is a critical tool in maintaining law and order and plays a vital role in crime detection. A standardised and well-maintained network is essential for it to function effectively, it was said, with cohesive planning and centralised oversight.

What is important is that the city is completely covered by surveillance. This applies especially to commercial establishments like shops, many of which still do not have CCTV surveillance. This should be made mandatory during the licensing stage.

Surveillance has been such a vital component of crime solving. It plays some part in deterrence, too. This edit space has often highlighted how surveillance played a part in solving a particular case or provided cops with clues which enabled them to get that breakthrough.

This is the reason why uniformity in surveillance at public infrastructure is vital so that it conforms to the standards set by a department. We also have to see that these cameras are maintained to a high level and give complete coverage of a building, street etc. They must be placed strategically so that little by lanes or corners are also covered.

Quality must be a priority. Shaky coverage, undecipherable pictures or figures, and parts of missing coverage are akin to having no surveillance at all. Regular maintenance, coordination by different departments and updating technology as upgrades arrive in the market are all part of the surveillance package. Use this modern tool with great efficacy for maximum results.
