May nothing darken Mumbai’s skies this Diwali

The Thane civic body recently issued a Diwali 2025 safety advisory, urging citizens to celebrate the festival responsibly. A statement issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation said as air quality in Thane falls under the “moderate” category, only green (eco-friendly) firecrackers are permitted within the city, in line with the orders of the National Green Tribunal.

Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao appealed to citizens to celebrate a pollution-free Diwali by following the guidelines. While this is about the Thane civic body, this advice stands in good stead across the city. In a move to raise awareness, informative banners have been displayed across Thane city by the municipal corporation.

Wear cotton clothes while handling firecrackers. Children need to be supervised, accompanied by adults during firecracker-bursting time. Those bursting crackers must keep at least two water buckets accessible. Avoid rockets as these have been known to enter home windows or even fly erratically. People burst crackers on pavements at times, literally at the feet of pedestrians, which is extremely dangerous.

Bikers and car drivers need to keep a sharp eye out for crackers that are thrown on the roads, literally in front of vehicles. Very cautious driving and riding are needed. While crackers are one aspect, we can mark these days in other ways too.

Good food, greetings, making those alone less lonely and including them in festivities in some way, enjoying the lights of maybe giving a little something to the underprivileged, especially children at this time. This is the true spirit of these days, bringing light into the hearts of all citizens.

Respect, responsibility, and restraint also mean full Diwali enjoyment. Let nothing darken our skies or dim the light in these days. Wishing Mumbai an incandescent Diwali.
