Union Cabinet clears Phase-2 of Pune Metro Rail with Rs 9,858-crore outlay

Pune is set for another major boost to its public transport network, with the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approving Line-4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line-4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, news agency ANI reported.

This marks the second major approval under Phase 2, coming after the sanctioning of Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi). The meeting of the Union Cabinet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Together, Lines-4 and 4A will span 31.636 km and include 28 elevated stations, connecting IT hubs, commercial centres, educational institutes, and residential belts across East, South, and West, ANI reported.

According to a government statement, the project will be completed in five years at an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crore. It will be jointly funded by the Centre, Maharashtra Government, and external bilateral or multilateral funding agencies.

These lines form a crucial component of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will integrate with existing and sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line-2), as well as Swargate (Line-1), ANI reported. They will also offer an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and connect to upcoming corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, ensuring seamless multimodal connectivity across metro, rail, and bus systems.

Stretching from the Kharadi IT Park to the scenic Khadakwasla area, and linking Hadapsar’s industrial zones with Warje’s residential neighbourhoods, Lines 4 and 4A will bring together diverse parts of the city. By running along Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the corridors are expected to ease congestion on some of Pune’s busiest routes while enhancing safety and promoting green, sustainable mobility.

Ridership projections indicate that the combined daily footfall on Lines 4 and 4A will be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh by 2058.

Of this, the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor is projected to carry 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, increasing to 9.33 lakh by 2058. The Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur line is expected to see ridership climb from 85,555 in 2028 to 2.41 lakh in 2058. These estimates underscore the significant long-term growth anticipated on both corridors.

“The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will carry out all civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems works. Pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy are already underway,” the statement read.

With this latest approval, the Pune Metro network will expand beyond the 100 km mark, representing a major milestone in the city’s transition towards a modern, integrated, and sustainable urban mobility system.

With Lines 4 and 4A, Pune will gain not only more metro tracks but also a faster, greener, and more connected transport future. These corridors are designed to save commuters valuable time, ease traffic congestion, and offer a safe, reliable, and affordable public transport option. In the coming years, they are expected to become the true lifelines of Pune, reshaping urban mobility and contributing to the city’s growth story.
