Amid growing buzz around sequels and biopics, Rajkumar Hirani has opened up about the future of his most loved franchises, Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots. In a recent chat, the filmmaker revealed he is actively developing ideas for both projects, while also juggling other ambitious ventures. To note, it was earlier reported that he is all set to take the 3 Idiots sequel on floors by mid-2026.

In conversation with Variety India, Rajkumar Hirani spoke about both films and said, “I have a couple of ideas at the moment. I’m actually working on both the films. I’ve been working on a Munna Bhai script and also on a 3 Idiots sequel idea. For Munna Bhai, I had an idea which is done to a larger level, but still, I haven’t found the right end for it.”

The director further mentioned, “For the 3 Idiots (sequel), it was just very recently that suddenly, out of nowhere, this one idea sparked up. And I have no idea how it’s gone out in the universe. Because it’s still not there, but we said we’ll work on it. And then, as and when it happens… but somehow, one morning, I saw that the news is out there. I have three or four scripts with me at the moment, and I’ll have to pretty quickly take a call on which way to walk now.”

The filmmaker is reportedly collaborating with Aamir Khan for Dadasaheb Phalke’s biopic. While rumours earlier suggested that the film would roll in January 2026, the ambitious plan has now been kept for another day. A source revealed to Mid-day, “The script needed more work, and both Raju and Aamir were clear that unless the script captured Dadasaheb’s life in all its glory, they wouldn’t take it on floors. They aren’t in a rush.”

Apart from this, Hirani was also set to reunite with Ranbir Kapoor for a biopic on an athlete. However, that film too was deferred. “Hirani and Ranbir were very excited about this one; they had been jamming on it through the year,” informed a trade source to Mid-day, adding that the script needed more time.
