The Delhi Traffic Police issued nearly 5,000 challans including 1,204 for drunk driving during Holi 2026 celebrations in the national capital, reported the PTI.
Officials said that more than 1,200 challans for drunk driving during a special enforcement drive across the city on Holi. The western range recorded the highest number of violations during the festival.
According to official data, a total of 1,204 challans were issued for drunk driving during the Holi celebrations on Wednesday. This was slightly lower than 1,213 cases recorded last year, indicating a marginal decline in such violations.
The total number of traffic violations also fell significantly this year. Authorities issued 4,929 challans for various offences during the special drive, nearly 32 per cent fewer than the 7,230 cases recorded during last year’s Holi.
Western range records highest cases
Among the city’s ranges, the western range—covering Dwarka, Outer and West districts—reported the highest number of drunk driving cases at 297.
The central range registered 257 cases, followed by the northern range, which covers Rohini, Outer and Outer North Delhi, with 256 violations.
The eastern range, including Shahdara, East and Northeast Delhi, recorded 208 cases, while the southern range, covering South and Southeast Delhi, reported 117 challans.
The New Delhi range, which includes Southwest and New Delhi districts, recorded the lowest number with 69 cases.
Checks conducted across the city
Police set up multiple checkpoints on major roads and intersections where motorists were subjected to breath analyser tests as part of the safety campaign.
Apart from drunk driving, authorities also issued 3,725 challans for other offences such as driving without seat belts, triple riding on two-wheelers, riding without helmets and dangerous driving.
Enforcement drive aimed at road safety
Officials said the enforcement drive was carried out on March 4 as part of a citywide campaign to curb drunk driving, overspeeding and other traffic violations during the Holi festivities.
Traffic police teams were stationed at key roads and areas known for large festive gatherings to monitor motorists and prevent accidents. Authorities also urged people not to drive after consuming alcohol, warning that drunk driving significantly increases the risk of road accidents.
