Russia offers oil and LNG supplies to India amid global energy crisis

India and Russia have reaffirmed their strong partnership across key sectors, especially energy, during the recent visit of Russia’s First Deputy Chairman Denis Manturov.

Manturov stated that Russian companies are fully capable of increasing the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India. This assurance is significant as India looks to secure stable energy sources amid rising global uncertainty. The move reflects deepening energy cooperation between the two countries.

Manturov`s visit comes at a time when global energy markets are under pressure due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, reported ANI.

He also highlighted that Russia has already increased its supply of mineral fertilisers to India by 40 per cent by the end of 2025, and is ready to continue meeting India’s growing demand.

Focus on agriculture and nuclear energy

In addition to energy, both countries are working on a joint project for urea (carbamide) production, which is expected to strengthen long-term agricultural cooperation. This project will help India ensure a steady supply of fertilisers, which are crucial for the farming sector.

India and Russia also reviewed their ongoing collaboration in nuclear energy. Work on new power units at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is progressing as per schedule. This project remains a key pillar of bilateral cooperation and contributes to India’s clean energy goals as per the news agency.

Wider strategic cooperation expands

Beyond energy and agriculture, the discussions covered expanding ties in sectors such as industry, space, education, innovation, and technology. Both countries are looking to strengthen their overall strategic partnership and explore new areas of cooperation.

Manturov, who co-chairs the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission, also held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, connectivity, critical minerals, and mobility, while also reviewing progress made since the India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025.

High level meetings and global discussions

During his visit from April 2 to April 3, Manturov met several senior Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the ongoing situation in West Asia. The discussions reflected a shared interest in maintaining stability and strengthening cooperation in a changing global environment.

Manturov’s visit highlights the commitment of both India and Russia to deepen their economic and strategic ties. With growing collaboration in energy, fertilisers, nuclear power, and emerging sectors, the partnership continues to evolve and adapt to global challenges.
