Drug bust in Palghar: Maharashtra Police seize Rs 44 lakh brown sugar; 3 held

Police have arrested two persons and detained a juvenile after seizing brown sugar valued at over Rs 44 lakh in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, an official said on Tuesday.

Raid based on tip-off

Acting on a tip-off about drug trafficking activities, police conducted a raid at a flat in a building in the Pandit Pada area of Saphala on Sunday, District Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh said, PTI reported. 

During the operation, police recovered 224.61 grams of brown sugar, valued at Rs 44,92,200. Cash, packing materials, and other items were also seized, taking the total value of the recovery to Rs 45,25,850.

Accused arrested

Police arrested Kudhabax Mohammad Sahid (38), a resident of Uttarakhand, and Heena Jamil Ahmed (35), hailing from Uttar Pradesh. A juvenile was also detained in the case, the official said, the news agency reported. 

Case under NDPS Act

An FIR was registered on Monday against the accused under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Custody and further action

The arrested accused were produced before a local magistrate and remanded in police custody till May 8. The juvenile was sent to a remand home, police added.

NESCO drug overdose case: Mumbai Police secure fresh police custody of two suspects after key accused`s arrest

Two accused in the NESCO drug overdose case, Veenit Gerelani and Ayush Sahitya, have been remanded to fresh police custody after previously being in judicial custody, officials said on Monday.

The Borivali court granted the Vanrai Police four days of custody to allow further investigation into the case, they said.

The custody of Gerelani and Sahitya comes after recent arrest of key accused in the matter.

The alleged main supplier, Mahesh Khemlani, also known as Mark, was recently arrested by the police, officials said. 

According to police sources, Gerelani and Sahitya were in close contact with both Khemlani and another accused identified as Zia. Investigators believe the two played a key role in the network.

Two MBA students had died following a suspected drug overdose during a music concert at NESCO in Mumbai.

Officials said that a large number of financial transactions linked to the alleged drug operation were routed through bank accounts connected to the two suspects.
