Donald Trump mocks Democrats, floats 2028 ‘dream team’ at White House dinner

US President Donald Trump transformed a White House dinner honouring law enforcement officials into a politically charged event on Monday night, using the occasion to joke about the 2028 presidential election, criticise Democratic rivals and highlight his administration’s priorities, reported IANS.

The dinner, held in the Rose Garden during National Police Week, was attended by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Cabinet members and senior law enforcement leaders from across the country, reported IANS.

During his nearly 30-minute speech, Trump moved across several topics including immigration, crime, the White House, drones, political opponents and the upcoming Republican leadership race.

Trump jokingly tests support for Vance and Rubio

One of the most talked-about moments of the evening came when Trump conducted an informal poll among attendees regarding potential Republican candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

Addressing the audience, Trump asked whether they preferred JD Vance or Marco Rubio as the future face of the Republican Party. Both leaders received strong applause from the crowd, prompting Trump to joke that the combination would make a “perfect ticket”, reported IANS.

He described the Vance-Rubio pairing as a possible “dream team” but clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as an official endorsement.

Trump has reportedly discussed the possibility of Vance and Rubio emerging as leading Republican contenders after his current term, although no formal announcements regarding the 2028 race have been made, reported IANS.

Vance, a first-term senator from Ohio before becoming Vice President, was chosen by Trump as his running mate during the 2024 presidential election campaign. Rubio, meanwhile, previously contested the Republican presidential primary in 2016 before later joining the Trump administration as Secretary of State.

Trump targets Democratic rivals during speech

The US President also took aim at prominent Democratic figures, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Trump criticised Newsom’s public speaking abilities and mocked his political standing, while also making remarks about Harris during the event.

The speech reflected Trump’s continued tendency to blend official White House events with campaign-style political messaging, a strategy he has frequently employed since returning to office.

White House renovations and security also discussed

Apart from politics, Trump spoke at length about renovations carried out at the White House, claiming he personally financed improvements to restore parts of the historic building, reported IANS.

He said portions of the structure had fallen into poor condition and stressed the importance of maintaining the White House as a symbol of national pride.

At one point during the event, birds flying overhead briefly interrupted the speech, leading Trump to joke about drones and modern security concerns.

Trump also praised law enforcement personnel and thanked them for their support, while commending senior administration officials including Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and FBI Director Kash Patel.

The annual Police Week event in Washington traditionally honours officers killed or injured in the line of duty and is attended by law enforcement representatives from across the United States.
