Filmmaker David Dhawan’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is set to release in theatres on June 5. The film will reportedly mark his final directorial venture, as the filmmaker is planning to retire from filmmaking after its release. The movie stars his son, Varun Dhawan, in the lead role.
David Dhawan on restrictions in comedy
During the 1990s, David Dhawan delivered several comedy blockbusters, including Judwaa, Coolie No. 1, Partner, and Raja Babu. Most of his films featured either Govinda or Salman Khan in lead roles. Recently, Dhawan spoke about how the approach towards comedy has changed over the years and the restrictions that now come with it.
Following the trailer launch of their upcoming film, father-son duo David and Varun Dhawan sat down for a conversation organised by PVR INOX to discuss the veteran filmmaker’s career. During the interaction, David said that comedy films face increased scrutiny today.
“You can’t degrade women in films today. If you do so, the censor board will hand you a long list of restrictions. So, I was a little careful and sensitive towards women characters, while with the men, I can still do anything onscreen,” he said.
In his 37-year career, David Dhawan has directed 45 films. Reflecting on his journey, he admitted that while he feels physically tired, he has not lost his passion for filmmaking. However, he now wishes to focus on his health and family.
“You get tired, but you never get tired of making films. I’ve made so many movies that I can still make four more, but sometimes health has to be prioritised, and you also need time for family,” he shared.
Recently, Karan Johar penned an emotional note amid reports of David Dhawan’s retirement. Praising the veteran director’s legacy, Karan reportedly said, “David sir has given Hindi cinema some of its most entertaining films. His understanding of comedy and family audiences is truly unmatched.”
