Umrao Jaan restrored

Umrao Jaan is a 1981 period musical drama, which was adapted from the author of Urdu Novel Mirza Hadi Ruswa`s 1899 book named Umrao Jaan Ada. The novel narrates the life of a tawaif and poet of Lucknow and her rise to stardom. The film is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of India, with 4 awards in the 29th National Film Awards. This included the Best Actress Award to Rekha.

On June 2, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, the director of Umrao Jaan in a tweet revealed that the film was restored in 4K resolution as the film was re-released on the big screen on June 27.

Muzaffar Ali mentioned, “Umrao Jaan was not just a film, it was a journey into the soul of a lost culture, a forgotten tehzeeb. I had actors who brought a lot of heft to their characters, and then there was Rekha, who lived Umrao Jaan and truly immortalised it. I am thrilled that the film is back on the big screen for a whole new generation to discover a time and culture that’s very much a part of our being.”
