Maharashtra government`s newly launched Electric Vehicle (EV) policy aims to promote the manufacturing and the use of electric vehicles in the state, state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Wednesday.
Sarnaik was speaking at the Commercial Vehicle Forum 2025, one of India`s biggest events for the commercial vehicle and road transport industry, held in Pune.
The EV policy, effective from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2030, includes measures such as mandatory EV-charging infrastructure in new residential buildings and incentives such as toll exemptions for EV users.
A government resolution issued by the transport department in May outlines the plans to position Maharashtra as a leading EV hub in India through infrastructure development, manufacturing support, and financial incentives.
Under the policy, the state aims to cut 325 tonnes of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 emissions and 1,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases from the transport sector in the next five years, as part of its Clean Mobility Transition Model.
The policy proposes incentives of up to Rs 2 lakh for electric four-wheelers used for transport and Rs 20 lakh for electric buses. One lakh EV two-wheelers, 25,000 transport category EV four-wheelers and 1,500 EV private as well as city buses will get these incentives.
EVs registered during the policy period will be fully exempt from motor vehicle tax and registration renewal fees. Additionally, EVs will receive a 100 per cent toll exemption on the Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Nashik expressways.
Sarnaik highlighted the newly launched Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy by the Maharashtra government. He said the main goal of this policy is to boost EV manufacturing and encourage people to use electric vehicles.
He also underlined Maharashtra`s leading position in the automobile manufacturing sector in India.
The forum brought together top commercial vehicle manufacturers, auto suppliers, dealers, and transport industry leaders. They discussed current industry trends, new innovations, and the future of transportation.
Important topics such as off-highway segments, sustainable transport, and electric mobility were deeply discussed. During the event, the Commercial Vehicle and Fleet Awards were given to individuals and companies for their outstanding work in the industry.
Sarnaik stated that such platforms to strengthen the commercial vehicle sector were important and assured continued government support to make this sector more efficient and user-friendly.
