Actor Girija Oak has been in the entertainment business for over two decades now; however, it was recently that she shot to fame after a viral interview video went viral, turning her into ‘National Crush’ overnight. However, the fame hasn`t been al that sweet for Girija, who is known for her work in Marathi and Hindi films and television shows. She has now addressed the sudden surge in fame, exposing its darker aspects.
Girija Oak recalls receiving obscene messages
Pictures of Girija from an interview, wearing a blue saree, were shared widely on social media. Internet users began calling her ‘India’s Sydney Sweeney’ and even called her the ‘new national crush’. Addressing the fame in a new interview with The Lallantop, Girija said, “Someone asked if anything has changed. I said no, I’m not getting extra work offers.”
The 37-year-old actor further opened up on the dark side of this sudden fame as well, sharing that she has been getting a lot of troubling messages on her social media platforms. “Someone said, ‘I can do anything for you, give me a chance.’ Someone even asked my rate — Ek ghanta bitaane ki keemat kya hai (What is the price to spend an hour with you?). There are many such messages. If these same people saw me in real life, they wouldn’t even look up. Behind a veil, people say anything. In front of you, they speak with love and respect. This is a strange zone. There can be a big debate on how seriously we should take this virtual space,” the actor said.
Girija Oak Condemns AI-Morphed Obscene Images
Earlier, when her AI-morphed photos went viral, the actress had posted an Instagram video addressing the situation, and said that the photos are being sexualised and objectified beyond her comfort.
She revealed that it deeply bothers her, especially since she has a 12-year-old son. The actress added, “When something becomes viral, something is trending. These kinds of images generally get made and get circulated as long as people are clicking on your post and you’re getting enough likes, interactions and views. That’s serving your purpose. We all know how this game is played.”
