Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has showered praise on Suresh Triveni’s newly released action drama Subedaar, calling it a bold and refreshing take on the classic mass entertainer. The film features Anil Kapoor in the lead, alongside Radhika Madan as Shyama, Aditya Rawal as Prince, Mona Singh as Babli Didi, with Faisal Malik and Saurabh Shukla in pivotal roles.
Hansal Mehta praises Subedaar
Sharing his thoughts after watching the film, Hansal Mehta noted that Triveni revisits the spirit of classic Hindi cinema while giving it a contemporary voice. He said the filmmaker taps into the raw rage and emotional intensity that once defined the ‘angry young man’ era, evoking shades of films like Zanjeer and Deewar.
What impressed him was that such a film comes from Triveni, a director known for tonally different works like Tumhari Sulu and Jalsa. He called it an unexpected but welcome departure from the director’s usual storytelling space.
The filmmaker also appreciated Triveni for stepping outside his comfort zone. According to Mehta, the director pays homage to the unapologetic 80s style of filmmaking in his own unique way, combining smart writing with strong performances.
Along with Anil Kapoor, Mehta had special praise for Radhika Madan’s performance in the film. He shared, “Radhikka Madan deserves better than what our cinema has given her so far, better parts, better films, more opportunities. As the feisty but internally wounded daughter, she does not shy away from ugliness in service of her character. That is courage. That is craft.”
With powerful performances and a director willing to experiment beyond his comfort zone, Subedaar is already sparking conversations among cinema lovers.
