A 30-year-old Infosys employee has been arrested for allegedly filming a female colleague inside the women`s washroom at the company`s Electronic City campus, Bengaluru, police informed on Wednesday.
In its response to the incident, Infosys issued a statement stating that all the complaints related to violations of its Code of Conduct are treated with the utmost seriousness and that action had been taken against the individual in question.
“We are aware of the incident and have taken necessary action against the employee, who is no longer with the company. We also promptly supported the complainant by facilitating a swift complaint with law enforcement authorities and continue to cooperate with the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.
“Infosys is committed to providing a harassment-free work environment and follows a zero-tolerance policy. We take every complaint regarding violations of the company`s Code of Conduct very seriously,” it added.
The accused, identified as Swapnil Nagesh Mali, was employed as a Senior Associate Consultant from Sangli in Maharashtra. He was reportedly apprehended by an HR personnel and handed over to the police, reported news agency PTI.
According to police sources, the incident took place on Monday morning when the complainant noticed a reflection and movement from the adjacent cubicle while she was in the washroom.
In her complaint, she alleged that Mali had been standing on a commode in the neighbouring cubicle, filming her with his mobile phone, PTI reported.
Distressed, she ran out screaming and alerted nearby colleagues.
Mali, who attempted to escape, was detained by HR staff, PTI reported.
Upon examining his mobile phone, the HR personnel allegedly found a video of the complainant, along with another secretly recorded video involving a different woman employee. Though the accused apologised repeatedly and deleted the footage, the HR staff reportedly took a screenshot as evidence before the deletions occurred.
The woman subsequently lodged a complaint with the Electronic City Police, who registered a case under the relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and Section 77 (Voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
“Based on the complaint, we have arrested the man. Further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer stated.
