On Saturday, June 28, southern Israel was ambushed by a projectile fire from Yemen’s Houthis. Siren sounds were heard as the Israeli Defence Forces on X posted. Before the sirens, there were alerts issued to the citizens via a push notification on their phones. The Israeli military claimed that the ballistic missile launched at Israel by the Iranian-backed Houthis was most likely intercepted in the air, reporting no casualties at present. This attack was a retaliation for Israel’s June 15th strike on Yemen’s Houthis targeting the Houthi military chief of staff, Muhammad Al-Ghamari.
IDF Spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin, in a press conference, said the strikes on Yemen and Iran were conducted at the same time. Defrin said, “Last night, while the strikes in Iran were ongoing, air force fighter jets flew over 2,000 kilometres from Israel and struck in Sanaa in Yemen. We will update later on the results of the strike.” It was also reported that Al-Ghamari was thought to be in a meeting with other Houthi leaders when the strike occurred, aiming at the command centre. Following the attack, the Houthis set up roadblocks in the area, and ambulances were dispatched.
Israel and the Houthis have been in periodic conflict since November 2023, a month after the October 7 Hamas attack. After a short pause during the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the conflict reignited on March 18, as the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, while the Houthis in Yemen launched around 50 ballistic missiles and more than a dozen drones toward Israel.
Presently, the Israeli army confirms the missiles have been “most likely successfully intercepted”, threatening Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi organisation.
Israel says missile launched by Yemen’s Houthis ‘most likely’ intercepted.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz have reportedly dismissed a report that said Israeli soldiers were ordered to launch an offensive on Palestinians seeking aid. They termed it “malicious falsehoods designed to defame the military.” Palestinian eyewitnesses claim that Israeli forces fired at crowds moving along the roads leading to the locations.
