Mayasabha teaser: Tumbbad director forays into mythology once again

A new chapter in Indian cinema is about to unfold.

Tumbbad director Rahi Anil Barve’s second film, Mayasabha, has unveiled its first motion teaser, ahead of its theatrical release on 16th January 2026.

Produced by Zirkon Films, with producers Girish Patel and Ankoor J. Singh, and co-produced by Shamrao Bhagwan Yadav, Chanda Shamrao Yadav, Kewal Handa, and Manish Handa, the film stands poised to be one of the most compelling and mysterious cinematic offerings of the coming year.

More about Mayasabha

In Mayasabha, the audience and the four characters begin the journey together — the treasure hunt starts at the same moment for both. But as the film moves forward, the revelations experienced by the characters and the revelations experienced by the audience begin to diverge. The shocks that hit the characters come from what they discover within the story, while the audience is struck by truths the characters themselves cannot see. Yet the film never alienates its viewers; it ensures that the audience remains emotionally aligned with the characters.

And perhaps the most unique — and even risky — choice lies in the climax, where Barve breaks almost every well-accepted rule associated with traditional mystery thrillers, choosing a path that is completely unheard of.

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Mayasabha marks his highly anticipated return after his celebrated debut, Tumbbad. Known for his atmospheric cinematic language, Barve once again leans into myth, mystery, and psychological depth — weaving a visual universe rich with detail, philosophy, and tension. His signature evolves: sharper, darker, and even more immersive.

He adds, “Mayasabha promises a journey into guarded truths and power structures far more dangerous than they appear at first glance. The film steps boldly into territory where symbolism meets suspense, and where silence reveals more than dialogue.”

Mayasabha will release in theatres on 16th January 2026.

Tumbbad re-release

The film was re-released in September 2024 due to high public demand. Originally, Tumbbad earned ₹7.34 crore over its entire 2018 run, but during its re-release, it surpassed that amount in just 4 days, grossing Rs 9.03 crore on Monday.

Tumbbad achieved cult status over time, as audiences flocked to theatres despite the movie being available on OTT platforms. The film minted an impressive Rs 24.50 crore in just two weeks of re-release. It continued performing well until its third week, bringing the combined box office collection to Rs 40.6 crore, cementing its legacy as a modern classic.
