Monsoon Session 2025: Both Houses of Parliament adjourned till Wednesday

Both the Houses of the Parliament faced major disruptions on Tuesday on Day 2 of Monsoon Session 2025 as the Opposition protested over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by the Election Commission (EC) in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

Amid ruckus by the Opposition, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been adjourned till Wednesday 11 am.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Lower House was first adjourned till noon, minutes after it convened, and then again till 2 pm, shortly after it reconvened amid Opposition protest.

Reacting on the developments, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government is ready for discussion, but the Opposition is “wasting public money” by indulging in protest.

“They [Opposition] are demanding discussion and we are ready for it. Then why are they not allowing the House to function? This double standard is wrong. If you want discussion, then do not create ruckus. The government has said that we are ready for discussion. You are wasting public money….,” Rijiju said.

Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament (MP) Jagdambika Pal, chairing the lower house, announced the adjournment and asked the Opposition to submit proposals and resolutions instead of raising placards in the Lok Sabha, reported ANI.

Pal had previously objected to the use of placards in the House.

“Instead of showing placards, you can submit your proposals, resolutions, and the business advisory committee will consider them. Speakers will give time, and the government will respond. Why are you worried?” he said.

Similarly, in the Upper House, Opposition MPs raised slogans, demanding a discussion on the electoral roll revision exercise in Bihar.

Several leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, stood on the steps of the Parliament at Makar Dwar and protested against the Bihar SIR, calling for the suspension of the process.

Multiple leaders were seen carrying posters condemning the revision exercise, holding placards calling it a “stealing of Indian Rights,” “death of democracy,” and more. The issue of Bihar SIR has been a contentious one with the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc MPs demanding a discussion on it in the Parliament.

The Opposition has also demanded discussions on the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack and India`s retaliatory response through Operation Sindoor.
