MP rains: Army called in for rescue and relief operations after floods

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding across several districts in Madhya Pradesh. The Indian Army has been called in by the state authorities for rescue and relief operations, especially in Shivpuri district, officials said, reported the PTI.

So far, nearly 2,900 people have been rescued from multiple districts affected by the floods.

Several people, including school children, were stranded in Shivpuri due to rising water levels. The situation worsened in Guna, where a culvert bridge collapsed and roads were cut off, affecting connectivity to Rajasthan, according to the PTI.

The Army was deployed from Jhansi late on Tuesday night to assist in relief operations in Shivpuri. Over 250 people were shifted to safer locations in Kolaras, while 100 more were reported trapped. Around 30 school children were also stranded in Pachavali village.

Major Shivam Ganguly, who is leading the Army’s efforts, said teams are working in different areas and a medical unit is on the ground to help.

In Guna, residents of eight villages were advised to move to safer places after damage to the Kalora Dam. Villages including Singapur, Tumda, and Bandha are among the worst affected, as per the PTI.

MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav monitored the situation from the Home Guard Flood Disaster Centre in Bhopal. He assured full government support for the victims, including food, shelter, and clothing.

“We will not tolerate any negligence. Our soldiers and officials are doing great work. The rains may continue for the next two to four days, and we are alerting people across the state,” he said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for the next 24 hours in several districts, including Bhopal, Vidisha, Shivpuri, Raisen, and Narmadapuram, predicting 8–9 inches of rain.

Helicopters have been requested from the Defence Ministry for two of the worst-hit districts to support ongoing relief work.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also held video calls with officials from Guna, Shivpuri, and Ashoknagar, directing them to ensure safe drinking water, food, shelter, and medical care for those affected. He emphasised the need for speed and coordination, warning that delays will not be tolerated.

“Central and state governments are fully committed to smooth and effective relief efforts,” Scindia posted on X.

CM Yadav also said that citizens helping with relief work will be honoured on Independence Day (August 15).
