UP: Man held after attempting to open aircraft door mid-air

A man was arrested at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi after he allegedly attempted to open the door of an aircraft twice during a flight, police said on Monday, reported the PTI.

According to the officials, the accused, identified as Adnan, had boarded IndiGo flight 6E 185 from Bengaluru on Saturday night.

Station House Officer, Phulpur, Atul Kumar Singh, said that the accused boarded the IndiGo flight 6E 185. After his arrest, the accused told police that it was his first time on a flight and he was feeling anxious.

Airline officials stated that shortly after the flight took off, the passenger attempted to open the aircraft door. Cabin crew members quickly intervened, pacified him, and ensured he returned to his seat.

Despite the initial intervention, the situation escalated again after the aircraft landed in Varanasi.

The passenger reportedly approached the door once more, raising concerns among the crew.

Crew takes action

The cabin crew acted promptly to restrain the individual and prevent any potential risk to passengers and the aircraft. Their timely response ensured that the situation remained under control throughout the flight and upon landing, according to the PTI.

Officials stated that standard safety procedures were followed to handle the incident without causing panic among other passengers.

Arrest at airport

Following a formal complaint lodged by IndiGo authorities, the youth was taken into custody at Babatpur airport by local police, as per the PTI.

Station House Officer Atul Kumar Singh of Phulpur police station said the accused was arrested soon after the aircraft landed and all passengers had disembarked safely.

Accused cites anxiety

According to the PTI, during initial questioning, the accused told police that it was his first time travelling by air and that he was feeling anxious during the journey.

Police officials said they are verifying his claims while continuing their investigation into the matter.

Legal action underway

Authorities have initiated further legal proceedings against the accused in connection with the incident. Officials added that strict action is being taken in accordance with aviation safety norms, the news agency reported.
