The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weather bulletin stated that heavy rains were expected in northeast, snowfall was likely in parts of north India and heatwave was predicted in parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
The IMD stated that rainfall and snowfall in parts of north India over the coming days were likely due to weather disturbances in the region.
Weather activity is likely to increase again between March 15 and March 18.
Light rain is also expected in Uttarakhand until March 14, followed by more widespread rainfall and snowfall on March 15 and 16.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-50 km/h are also likely in Himalayan states during this period.
It said that light to moderate rain and snowfall are likely across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, with rainfall expected to decrease briefly in coming days.
Thunderstorms forecast in several northern states
Isolated rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds may occur in parts of north India, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The weather department has advised residents to stay cautious as lightning and strong winds may affect some areas.
Heavy rain likely in northeast India
The IMD has also predicted widespread rainfall across northeast India between March 12 and March 18.
States including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive moderate to heavy rain, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Arunachal Pradesh.
Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also forecast for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Rain and storms in central and eastern regions
Parts of central and eastern India, including Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha, may experience scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds between March 13 and March 18.
Rainfall is also likely in West Bengal and Sikkim during this period.
Light rain expected in parts of south India
In southern parts of the country, isolated rain and thunderstorms may occur in Telangana on March 15 and 16.
Other regions such as Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema could also experience thunderstorms later in the week.
Heatwave conditions in western India
While rainfall is expected in several regions, heatwave conditions may continue in parts of western and central India.
The IMD has warned of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in Gujarat, particularly in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions.
Isolated heatwave conditions may also occur in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha.
Temperatures in some areas have already reached 38-42 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperature recorded at 42.2 degrees Celsius in Amravati in Vidarbha in Maharashtra.
Temperatures likely to change in coming days
According to the IMD, maximum temperatures across several regions may change in the coming days:
Temperatures in northwest India may rise slightly before falling again later in the week.
Central India may see a gradual fall in temperatures after the next two days.
Northeast India could experience a 4-5 degrees Celsius drop in maximum temperatures over the next two days.
Maharashtra may see no major change initially, followed by a slight fall later in the week.
The weather department stated that a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from March 14, which could lead to renewed rainfall and snowfall in the Himalayan region.
Forecast for March 14
On March 14, heavy rainfall may continue in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh as well as Assam and Meghalaya.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 km/h are expected in Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha.
Gusty winds of 30–40 km/h may occur in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Punjab, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.
Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely in Maharashtra, particularly in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, and in parts of Rajasthan and northeastern states.
Heatwave conditions may continue in Himachal Pradesh and Konkan and Goa, while hot and humid weather is expected in parts of Gujarat.
No warning for fishermen
The weather department said no specific warning has been issued for fishermen during this period.
The weather department, however, advised residents in affected regions to remain cautious during thunderstorms and strong winds.
