Maharashtra heatwave: Wardha hits blistering 47.1 degrees Celsius

Pune recorded a maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, even as several parts of Maharashtra, particularly Vidarbha, continued to reel under intense heatwave conditions, with Wardha emerging as the hottest place in the state at 47.1 degrees Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune’s maximum temperature was 0.6 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 23.9 degrees Celsius, slightly above the seasonal average. The city remained dry throughout the day, with no rainfall recorded.

The weather bureau has forecast mainly clear skies for Pune on Thursday, with conditions likely to turn partly cloudy by afternoon or evening. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.

While Pune witnessed relatively moderate weather conditions, Vidarbha continued to sizzle under extreme heat. Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius, while Amravati and Chandrapur also reported temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius. Most weather stations across Vidarbha recorded temperatures significantly above normal levels.

Mahabaleshwar remains Maharashtra’s coolest location; several Vidarbha districts cross 46 degrees Celsius

In contrast, Mahabaleshwar remained the coolest place in Maharashtra, with the minimum temperature dropping to 18.4 degrees Celsius.

No rainfall was reported from any major station across Central Maharashtra, Konkan-Goa, Marathwada, or Vidarbha on Wednesday, according to IMD data.

Despite the prevailing dry spell, Pune has recorded significantly above-normal rainfall so far this season. The city has received 92.8 mm rainfall against the normal seasonal average of 30.9 mm, marking an excess of 61.9 mm.

Weather officials attributed the surplus rainfall to active pre-monsoon systems that affected the region over the past few weeks. However, with dry weather likely to persist in the immediate future, daytime temperatures are expected to rise gradually in the coming days.

IMD has forecast mainly dry weather across most parts of Maharashtra over the next few days, with high maximum temperatures likely to continue, especially over Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada. Residents in heatwave-affected districts have been advised to take precautions against prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.

Mumbai and parts of coastal Maharashtra continued to witness humid weather conditions on Wednesday morning.

Relative humidity was recorded at 80 per cent in Colaba and 71 per cent in Santacruz, while Mahabaleshwar recorded the highest morning humidity at 86 per cent.
