Sonu Nigam has once again reminded audiences why he is considered one of Hindi cinema’s most versatile playback singers. During his ongoing The Revolution – Sonu Nigam Live tour in the US, the singer stunned audiences by switching between male and female voices during a performance.
Sonu Nigam sings in male and female voices
Sonu performed at a sold-out concert at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York on September 13. A clip from the show has been making the rounds on social media, capturing the singer performing Aaj Ki Raat from Don: The Chase Begins Again in his own rendition of both male and female portions.
The 2006 track was originally sung by Sonu alongside Alisha Chinai and Mahalakshmi Iyer. While the female portions are integral to the song’s original sound, Sonu took on those parts himself during the live performance, changing his vocal texture to recreate the different voices.
The audience can be heard cheering as the singer seamlessly moves between the portions, turning the familiar track into a showcase of his vocal range. Social media users were quick to praise the performance, with one calling him an “Absolutely legend”, while another described the rendition as a “treat to ears.”
One comment even compared Sonu’s female voice to that of singer Sunidhi Chauhan, highlighting just how convincing his vocal modulation sounded to listeners.
Sonu Nigam once sang in 54 voices
This isn’t the first time Sonu has showcased his ability to transform his voice. In an old interaction, the singer revealed that he used 54 different vocal modulations while recording the title track of Tees Maar Khan.
Explaining how the unusual experiment came about, Sonu said the multiple versions were not originally planned. He recorded the song in several different ways, after which composer Shirin Kunder combined the recordings to create the final effect.
“Yes, that is true. I have sung the title track of Tees Maar Khan in 54 voices,” Sonu had said, explaining that he effectively became both the chorus and the singer on the track.
The 2010 film, directed by Farah Khan, starred Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Akshaye Khanna. The song became another example of Sonu using his voice as an instrument and experimenting with different textures.
From recreating female vocals on stage to producing dozens of distinct voices for a single song, Sonu’s latest concert performance is yet another reminder of the vocal versatility that has kept him among Hindi cinema’s most recognisable playback singers.
