Who is Madame Azurie?

Born as Anna Marie Gueizelor, Madame Azurie was a pioneering classical dancer and actress, widely celebrated as the first “item dancer” of the Indian film industry. Long before the term became mainstream, her high-energy dance performances were known to draw audiences to theatres independent of a film’s main storyline. Born in Bengaluru to a German-Jewish doctor and a Hindu Brahmin nurse, she mastered both classical ballet and traditional Indian dance forms. Following the Partition of British India, she married Sayyed Allauddin Ahmed Gelani and relocated to Rawalpindi, Pakistan, where she continued her artistic journey.

Throughout her illustrious career in British India and later Pakistan, Madame Azurie broke cultural barriers and brought international recognition to dance in South Asian cinema.

What is Amri about?

Amri explores the coming-of-age journey of Amrita Sher-Gil as both an artist and a woman—her restless search for selfhood, her defiance of convention, and her determination to create a visual language entirely her own.
The youngest student ever admitted to the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Amrita developed a deeply personal artistic voice that highlighted the everyday lives of ordinary women and men in India.

Directed by Mira Nair, who has also co-written the film with Clara Royer, Amri is produced by Samudrika Arora, Michael Nozik and Mira Nair. The film is a Mirabai, Samscape and Papertown production in association with KNMA and Miramax.
