Queen 2 in trouble; Phantom Studios sue JioStar for Rs 250 crore over use of IP

Days after Kangana Ranaut wrapped up the shoot of the second instalment of Queen (2014), Phantom Studios on Monday alleged that Queen 2 is an “unauthorised sequel”.

Queen 2, which reunites Ranaut with director Vikas Bahl who also helmed the original, began its filming early 2026. The film has reportedly entered the post-production stage.

Phantom Studios has sued JioStar for Rs 250 crores, accusing the latter of unauthorised use and infringement of Queen’s intellectual property (IP). The case has been filed in the Bombay High Court. mid-day has learnt that the legal action was initiated after “repeated communication” about the alleged infringement and “settlement discussions” between the two parties.

“Their non action is what has led to Phantom Studios suing them for infringement. There was even a public notice put out and multiple communications sent to Vikas and JioStar as well, informing them before this step was taken,” informed a source close to the development. Another insider shared that Phantom Studios was prompted to take the legal route after learning about the wrapping up of Queen 2.

Queen, that won two National Awards, including the best actor honour for Ranaut, was produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Phantom Films (Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Madhu Mantena, and Bahl), which was dissolved in 2018. Three years later, it was revived as Phantom Studios.

Officials from Phantom Studios did not comment on the development. A statement from JioStar is awaited.

This is the public notice that Phantom Studio issued in April, saying that they own 50 percent rights to Queen IP, including the right to make sequels. The notice mentions that Phantom Studios didn’t consent to developing any “adaptation or derivative works” based on Queen
