Actor Omi Vaidya, best remembered for playing Chatur Ramalingam, or “Silencer”, in 3 Idiots, has voiced support for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike. As Wangchuk’s protest entered its 17th day, Vaidya urged people not to let the real-life inspiration behind Aamir Khan’s character Rancho in the film fade into public memory.
Omi Vaidya shares a heartfelt message for Sonam Wangchuk
Taking to Instagram, Vaidya shared a heartfelt video appealing to the public to stand with Wangchuk. Drawing a connection between the activist and the beloved 3 Idiots character, he said, “Please don’t let Phunsukh Wangdu die.” He reminded viewers that the character of Phunsukh Wangdu was inspired by Wangchuk’s life and innovations, making the activist’s ongoing struggle all the more significant.
In his emotional appeal, Vaidya called on citizens to amplify Wangchuk’s message and ensure that his peaceful protest receives the attention it deserves. Stressing the activist’s contribution to society, he urged people not to remain silent while Wangchuk’s health continues to deteriorate. “We cannot lose someone who has dedicated his life to education, innovation and the future of our country,” Vaidya said in the video.
All about the hunger strike
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in support of the Cockroach Janta Party‘s protest over alleged examination irregularities and other demands. According to health updates shared by organisers, he has lost over 8 kg since beginning the fast, while his blood glucose levels have dropped significantly, raising serious concerns about his condition.
As concern over Wangchuk’s health grows, several public figures have urged him to call off the fast while reiterating their support for his cause. Politicians, activists and members of civil society have appealed to him to prioritise his health so he can continue advocating for the issues he believes in.
Wangchuk himself has maintained that his protest is about encouraging citizens to take responsibility rather than waiting for a single individual to lead change. In an earlier message from the protest site, he said, “I am not Gandhi… Be the hero of your own life.” He also urged supporters to participate peacefully and raise awareness about the movement instead of relying solely on him.
Vaidya’s post has resonated widely on social media, with many users praising the actor for speaking up. His reference to 3 Idiots and Phunsukh Wangdu struck a chord with fans of the film, who recalled Wangchuk’s influence on one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable characters. As discussions around the activist’s health intensify, Vaidya’s appeal has added another prominent voice to the growing calls for public attention and support.
