Bajrang Dal objects to Sunidhi Chauhan's outfit during Surat concert

Sunidhi Chauhan’s Surat concert has sparked controversy after videos from her I Am Home India Tour show went viral. While fans lauded the singer’s power-packed performance, the Bajrang Dal raised objections to the outfits worn by dancers on stage, citing concerns over cultural values. Organisers, however, dismissed the complaints.

Debate over outfits worn at Sunidhi Chauhan’s Surat concert

Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan’s I Am Home India Tour started in Surat on October 3 with an electrifying concert that featured intricate choreography, a live band, a 15-member dance crew and an interesting aerial act. But videos from the show have now sparked a debate over the costumes of the dancers and the stage act

The singer performed at Grand Ferohar in Surat’s Pal area, where she reportedly entered while seated on a chair suspended around 30 feet above the ground. Chauhan energised the fans by saying, “Let me sing today,” and delivered a high-octane performance on hit songs such as Dance Pe Chance. She also changed the outfit twice.

Pictures and videos from the concert show Chauhan all dressed up in a glamorous, pop-star-inspired attire that has now become her signature style for all her recent live performances. However, the controversy emerging from the show is not entirely about Chauhan’s own outfit. The objections reported by Danik Bhaskar and News X were mainly aimed at the outfits worn by the dancers performing with her.

What did Bajrang Dal say?

After videos of the concert went viral, Abhishek Rajput, coordinator of the Surat East division of the Bajrang Dal, said the appropriate standards of dress were not maintained during the concert.  He said they were not against any artist or art, but that appropriate standards of dress were essential at cultural events where family, women and young children were present.

He further said that attire in such events should be appropriate in accordance with Indian culture. To ensure that Western culture and its influence do not hamper Indian society, it is important to keep the tradition alive governing Indian women’s attire.

He further said that he would speak to event organisers and appeal to them to set appropriate dress limits when organising any such programme in the future.

How did organisers react?

Ajesh Kumar of Sachi Events, the organiser of the event, had strongly denied the allegations made by the Bajrang Dal. He said that every Indian citizen has the choice to wear the clothing of their preference. The law does not impose any dress code. In previous concerts, Sundhi has worn similar outfits. He claimed that those who couldn’t receive free passes to the event are deliberately creating this kind of chaos on social media.

Meanwhile, Sunidhi Chauhan is yet to comment on the matter.
