Cong leader remarks on US shooting spark row, BJP alleges `anti-India mindset`

A political controversy broke out after Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar commented on a recent shooting incident in the United States, drawing parallels with public sentiment in India. The remarks triggered sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which accused him of promoting an “anti-India mindset”.

Wadettiwar links US incident to public anger

Speaking at a public event, Wadettiwar suggested that such violent incidents are often the result of growing public anger against governments. Referring to the shooting linked to US President Donald Trump, he said such outcomes are “bound to happen” when people feel their interests are not being served.

He further claimed that a similar sentiment exists in India, although it may not be visible through large-scale protests. According to him, the absence of visible demonstrations does not necessarily reflect public satisfaction with governance.

BJP launches strong counterattack

Reacting sharply, BJP spokesperson C. R. Kesavan condemned the remarks, calling them “vile” and “deplorable”. He alleged that such statements reflect deep-rooted hostility towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and extend to a broader negative outlook towards the country.

Kesavan accused the Congress of repeatedly making controversial statements against national leadership and institutions, claiming that such rhetoric damages India’s image.

Past statements invoked in criticism

The BJP also referred to Wadettiwar’s earlier comments on issues such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks, alleging a pattern of controversial positions. The party argued that these remarks indicate a consistent approach within sections of the Congress leadership.

Opposition criticism extends beyond BJP

The comments also drew criticism from Sanjay Nirupam, who described the remarks as reflective of frustration within the opposition. He cautioned against making such statements for political gain, stating that drawing parallels with international unrest was inappropriate.

Nirupam added that similar narratives had been invoked during protests in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and warned that such comparisons could send the wrong message.

Political tensions escalate

The controversy has intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition, with both sides trading sharp accusations. While the Congress has not issued an official clarification on Wadettiwar’s remarks, the BJP has continued to press the issue, framing it as part of a larger ideological divide.
