‘No politician is the country’: Imran Khan justifies questioning authority

Actor Imran Khan has spoken about the distinction between criticising a political leader and criticising a country, stressing that questioning those in positions of authority should not be viewed as an attack on the nation. In a conversation with Yuvaa, the actor reacted to the question on hatred and politics that often leads to violence when called out.

“Important to note here that a critique of a political official is not a critique of a country. In case it needs to be said, no politician is the country,” Khan said. He had earlier voiced his opinion during student protest too.

Imran Khan pointed out at Political criticism

The actor pointed out that citizens are as much a part of the country as any individual politician. “At any point, the people who stand up, are citizens they are the country as much as any individual politician,” he said. Khan further argued that the number of citizens in a democracy should be taken into account when discussing who represents the country. “If you out number the politician by the laws and Democracy, you are more of the country than that one politician,” he said.

The actor also stressed the need to separate patriotism from political allegiance. According to him, people should not have to prove their love for their country simply because they question a political leader or official. “You also have to separate this idea, the idea that you have to defend the love for the country,” Khan said.

He described political leaders as public servants who are elected to represent citizens. “I am asking the question for the politician, you are public servant, you are an official, you are elected by public demand. You are not the country,” he said.

On authorities to be questioned

Khan also spoke about the importance of questioning authority and holding those in power accountable. “It is to want better,” he said, explaining that criticism can stem from a desire for improvement rather than opposition to the country itself.

The actor added that structures of authority should be open to scrutiny. “I believe that any structure of authority should be open to questioning. It must be called upon to justify its power and authority,” he said.

Khan further said that authority should be changed if it fails to justify itself. “And if it cannot justify the authority then it should be broken down and altered to something more just,” he added.

Through his comments, Khan drew a clear distinction between a nation and its political leadership, arguing that citizens have the right to question public officials without that criticism being interpreted as criticism of the country.
