Sindhudurg’s Muth village becomes state’s first to complete self-enumeration

Muth village in Vengurla taluka of Sindhudurg district has become the first village in Maharashtra to successfully complete the self-enumeration process under the ongoing campaign ahead of Census 2027, an official statement said on Friday.

The officials described it as an example of strong coordination between the administration and local residents.

Chief Principal Census Officer Nirupama J Dange praised the efforts of the village and appealed to other villages across Maharashtra to take inspiration from Muth and complete the process within the prescribed time, the statement said.

Officials said the success was achieved under the guidance of District Collector Tripti Dhodmise with active participation from citizens and local authorities.

Entire village participated

According to the administration, Muth village has 36 houses and 43 families with a total population of 144.

All families in the village reportedly took part in the self-enumeration campaign and submitted the required information accurately for the upcoming Census.

Local officials played key role

Authorities credited the success to detailed planning by Tehsildar Omkar Otari along with the coordinated efforts of the Naib Tehsildar, Circle Officer and Talathi officials.

Residents also responded positively to awareness efforts and cooperated fully during the campaign.

Inspiration for other villages

Officials stated that the achievement of Muth village has become an inspiration for Sindhudurg district and an example for the entire state.

The administration said the accomplishment demonstrated how government initiatives can succeed through effective public participation and local coordination.

Maharashtra govt appeals for active participation in self-enumeration

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday appealed to all state government officers and employees to actively participate in the process.

As per the official statement, the appeal comes as part of preparations for the nationwide census exercise being conducted by the Government of India. The officials also asserted that the census 2027 will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will include house listing and a housing census, while the second phase will focus on population enumeration.

In Maharashtra, the first phase is scheduled between May 16 and June 14, 2026. Ahead of this, citizens have been given the option to complete ‘Self-Enumeration’ from May 1 to May 15, 2026, through an online portal.

Officials further highlighted that the move aligns with the Centre’s initiative, which promotes the use of technology in governance. Moreover, the self-enumeration facility allows citizens to submit their own details digitally via the official census portal, improving the accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of data collection.

The General Administration department further emphasised that participation from government employees would play a crucial role in setting an example for the wider public and ensuring the success of the exercise.
