Surabhi Dashputra hopes fusion will bring youth closer to classical music

Traditional and contemporary music can go hand in hand. That’s something singer Surabhi Dashputra hopes to prove with her music. Her latest Punjabi pop track, Ludhiyane Waleya, is a step in that direction. “This track allowed me to bring a playful and spirited side of my voice to the forefront. It’s a celebration of individuality, and the joy of embracing new musical directions,” she said.

Over the past year, Dashputra has constantly married classical and contemporary sounds with her releases, More Sajan, Rahiya Ve, and Dil Vich Rab. With her roots in Hindustani classical music, she sees fusion as a way to take the traditional sounds to the youth. “I see fusion as a bridge rather than a compromise, provided it is approached with respect and understanding. Young people remain curious about classical music, but it must be presented in an accessible and engaging way.”

Dashputra may not be off the mark, if the numbers are anything to go by. More Sajan, Rahiya Ve, and Dil Vich Rab have collectively crossed two million streams on Spotify over the past year. She said, “Crossing two million streams is encouraging because every stream represents a listener choosing to spend time with your music. In a world where people have endless options, that choice means a lot. But to me, success is measured by longevity and artistic growth.”
