Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday described the formation of the BJP government in West Bengal as an “emotional and overwhelming” moment for party workers and supporters, saying it marked not only the party’s victory but also “India’s victory”.
Fadnavis made the remarks after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari, who took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP chief minister at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Grounds, marking the saffron party’s first government in the state since Independence.
“Today is a day of immense joy and happiness not only for the BJP but for all of us,” Fadnavis said while congratulating Adhikari on becoming the new chief minister of the eastern state.
Calling West Bengal strategically important for the country, Fadnavis said, “This is not just BJP’s victory but also a victory for India. From the security point of view, West Bengal is a very important state. We are all very happy with the way the Suvendu Adhikari government has been formed in the state.”
The senior BJP leader said the new government had been formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed confidence that the administration would fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bengal.
Describing West Bengal as the land of Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee and freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose, Fadnavis said the BJP coming to power in the state carried special significance for party workers and supporters across the country.
Adhikari secured 1,27,301 votes in Nandigram
The BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly in the recently concluded elections, while the Trinamool Congress won 80 seats after ruling the state for 15 years.
Adhikari also registered a major political victory in Nandigram. According to data available on the Election Commission of India’s official website, he secured 1,27,301 votes at the end of the 19th and final round of counting in the constituency.
Earlier, BJP leaders had congratulated Adhikari after he was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in West Bengal following the party’s landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Several senior BJP leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata, including Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, J. P. Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan.
Chief ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma, Manik Saha, Rekha Gupta and Pushkar Singh Dhami were also present at the event held at the iconic Brigade Parade Grounds.
The BJP’s victory in West Bengal is being seen as a major political breakthrough for the party in eastern India, ending the Trinamool Congress’ decade-and-a-half-long rule in the state.
